Cancer Care

Manipal Foundation is supporting the needy patients to meet the high costs of cancer treatment.
  • During the year 2009-10 Manipal Foundation has supported seven BMT surgeries. During this year there is a commitment to support 25 BMT surgeries. We have already supported 4 surgeries during the first three months of 2010-11.
  • More than 75 patients in Kasturba Hospital Manipal and 30 patients in KMC Attavar were supported for treatment of cancer in the year 2009-10. This year during the first three months, we have already supported 40 patients diagnosed with cancer.
TREATMENT FOR CANCER IS EXPENSIVE AND EXHAUSTING AND CAN REALLY BE A TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE
FOR THE PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. WHILE EVERY EFFORT IS MADE TO PROVIDE SUBSTANTIAL SUPPORT TO
THEM TO MEET THE FINANCIAL COSTS, WE ARE LOOKING FOR LIKE MINDED ORGANISATIONS OR CORPORATES TO
JOIN US AS PARTNERS IN SUPPORTING THE TREATMENT FOR CANCER.

Care Of The Elderly

The Kasturba Hospital, Mangalore, has taken the initiative of setting up the Ashraya Day Care Centre for the elderly. Here, the elderly, who are in good health and with the support of their working children, get an opportunity to meet up with other senior people at the hospital's day care center. This center offers security, while allowing their talents to be put to good use. The centre's activities which generate added incomes, are donated to social causes. Abhaya Ashraya at Kasturba Hospital, Mangalore, has been running an old age home for the last 20 years, providing free medical aid, drugs, diet and complete health related facilities for the aged. At this center, the sick and disabled are admitted and treated free of cost. Separate wards are provided for women, and old people are treated with complete dignity.
While the outpatient treatment costs are borne by the hospital, Manipal Foundation is supporting the cost of providing free bed facility to the destitute elderly citizens and also bears the entire cost of treatment involving surgeries for these patients.

Manipal Foundation is also meeting the cost for providing amenities at the Ashraya Day Care Center and also supports in the conduct of some cultural programmes, etc for the recreation of the senior citizens.

IT IS AN UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTH THAT MANY OF OUR ELDERLY ARE ABANDONED BY THEIR FAMILIES AND AS A SOCIETY WE NEED TO DO OUR BEST TO MAKE THEIR TWILIGHT YEARS LESS TRAUMATIC. WE APPEAL TO ALL THE LARGE HEARTED PEOPLE TO SUPPORT US IN THIS INITIATIVE SO THAT WE CAN PROVIDE FREE MEDICAL CARE TO THE DESTITUTE ELDERLY PEOPLE.

Child Care

Operation Smile a US based organization, works closely with the Kasturba Hospital's anesthetists and plastic surgeons and operated on over 200 children with cleft lip and cleft palate deformities, helping them smile again. The children were all treated free of cost and many of them were from rural areas.
All the above are now fully funded by the Manipal Group without much external support.
In addition, several educational scholarships are awarded at the local school/ college levels to encourage the bright students who have no financial support.
These amount to more than Rs 20 Million per year currently and the plan is to increase it by another Rs 10 Million this year

Our hospitals are equipped with Neonatal ICUs and Pediatric ICUs where children requiring critical care are given the state of art treatment. Manipal foundation supports the medical expenses of children whose parents cannot afford it.

During this year 2010-11 the Foundation has supported 13 new born babies requiring critical care due birth weight problems and other complications. 18 children admitted to pediatric ICU were also supported so far. 39 cardiac surgeries for children have been supported by the Foundation. Another 26 children requiring treatment for various other illnesses were also supported during this year during the quarter ending June 2010.
