Dr. T M A Pai, is rightly regarded as one of the architects of modern Karnataka by his pioneering efforts in the area of self financing education and affordable healthcare. The triumph of Dr. Pai, spurred by his mothers persuasion that he give back something to the soil which nurtured him, was in breathing new life and in establishing in the rural track of Manipal, an education complex with the dimensions and foundations of a World Class University, an ultra-modern hospital, small industries and outstanding banking institutions.
After 15 years of surgical practice, he realized the dire need to assure economic security to the poor and also to empower them with the art of savings, he went on to establish the Syndicate Bank which helped greatly in transforming the lot of the poor section of the society.

The baton of carrying on the joyous responsibility of empowering people through better education and improved healthcare is being successfully shouldered by Dr Ramdas Pai, the President of the Manipal group.
Convinced on the need to augment the availability of quality doctors, paramedics, nurses and quality healthcare facilities to the masses, led Dr Ramdas Pai to set footprints of medical Education in hitherto untrodden areas of Nepal, Sikkim, Melaka.

- With the active intervention in seven Rural maternity and Child Welfare Homes (RMCW) homes around Manipal and Udupi, the served community today boasts of the best healthcare indices, at times, surpassing the WHO standards.
- A unique participative health insurance coverage “Manipal Arogya Suraksha” and a discount scheme “Manipal Arogya Card”- are endeavours which have made healthcare easily accessible and affordable to nearly 200,000 lives
The crowning glory is the setting of the Manipal Foundation, in 2002 which is a charitable trust which actively supports healthcare, education, research and social upliftment.
